Geometry is really a lovely
form of music.  These lines are:
convergent
divergent
parallel
perpendicular
all of the above
                                    p  a  r  a  b  o  l  a
                                  is a particular favorite
surpassed in its delicious harmonies polyphonies
    only by the almighty strains
                       of

Hypotenuse           which I think I have spelled
                                                                        incorrectly
                                                                (it shames me to say)confess
                                      Hypoteneuse maybe?

even the shapes are a lot of fun
they take up the whole mouth
                 “equilateral triangle”
forces the tongue into a sort of
                      Perfect posture
           like finishing school for the
                 oral debutante.

think of theorems
the poetic nature of writing proofs
it’s a sort of breathtaking dance
whose end we will recognize immediately
                                when we see it.
I am jealous of the mathematician
he has all of the best words            (factorial)!
             except hyperbole.

for lack of a better title

once again, this is not my original presentation. eventually i will scan and post my version (of the truth) as the preview... until then, anyone that would really like to see an ms word version can e-mail me i suppose.

i even sort of hate the way it looks here. ugh. but i am so happy with the piece as a whole..

please critique me.

I would like to see this as you intended it before I comment

heres a simple logarithm for a critique

you know what would be the best favor would be if you could print it out and scan it (if you have such magics available to you) and send it back to me as an image file so i can stick it up now as the preview, instead of waiting the week or so i still have in front of me before i get my computing universe returned to it's fullandupright (all those files lost-lost) position.

pretty please?

I would be more than happy to but I am at work right now and so I have no scanner avaliable to me. Actually come to think of it I no longer have one at home either. Sorry
oh, gosh, don't be sorry! it'll get there eventually of its own volition.

I like the way you give life to the words themselves in this. The strikethroughs are a very nice touch. (Too bad they don't show here) Its great how the mispelled Hypotenus is so much larger that the proposed correction. I love the shapes taking up my mouth. Posture of the tongue is a great line. Your style shows through so nicely in this. (Factorial!) Love the end. Spacing out synecdoche is so twisted (in a good way). I have to admit that I am not a big math fan but it doesn't even matter because this about all the great sounds and patterns of math and none of the numbers. I can't think of any suggestions. Great work!
oh, your comment was so worth waiting for, i'm so glad i didn't have to!! it is heartbreaking that strikethroughs and typefaces don't show here. i'm glad you like shapes in your mouth that's one of my favorite flavors in the piece, too.
i actually detest math. i just think they have good words, dangit. i'm jealous or something.

of course the spelling was right the first time, but in my hand-written original-original version it didn't look right as i sprawled it out in big cursive.

if it weren't so egotistical i might favorite this one myself. i'm most proud of it out of my recent submissions.
